Japan Airlines (JAL) to Offer Direct Flights to Siem Reap Cambodia

October 17th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Japan Airlines (JAL) is set to offer direct flights to Siem Reap Cambodia according to Japan’s Corporate News.

While the flight is still contingent on government approval, the Japan Airlines (JAL) direct flight to Siem Reap Cambodia would elevate the need for Japanese tourist to the travel to Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh first in order to visit the holy Angkor Wat temple.

According to the Cambodia Ministry of Tourism, 120,000 Japanese visited Cambodia in 2006 so the Japan Airlines (JAL) direct flight to Siem Reap Cambodia should be a boon to the Angkor Wat temple tourism market.

This is good news. I wonder what type of aircraft will JAL use to fly to Siem Reap. It’s a small airport, it’s only capable of handling Boeing 737 or smaller aircrafts, unless Siem Reap International Airport plans to extend the runways for larger aircrafts. On the other hands, Pochentong International Airport in Phnom Pehn has been upgraded to handle large aircraft such as 4 engines Boeing 747. However, I don’t foresee PI has Boeing 747 of JAL landing on her strip any time soon. Regardless, this is a good indication that Cambodia’s tourism industry is growing. Cambodia’s goal is to reach 5 millions visitors by 2012. I think she can do it.
