Evidence that World Bank projects in Cambodia are riddled with corruption continues to concern World Bank official according to the Wall Street Journal.
The extend of such corruption runs so deep that in 2006 the World Bank ask for a $ 12 million refund by the Cambodia government in order to compensate for the mismanagement of funds and the corruption associated with such mismanagement.
Nonetheless, the World Bank announced in August that it is interested in helping the Cambodia government fight rural poverty, improve the business and investment, encourage social development, and promote the rule of law.
While the World Bank intentions seem noble, especially considering the Cambodia corruption track record, the real issue may be that the World Bank has a lot less potential customers as emerging markets continue to grow on their own without the help of the World Bank.
