Telekom Malaysia to Invest in Cambodia

Telekom Malaysia, fixed line operator, has announced that it will invest in Cambodia $150 million according to Reuters.

The Cambodia investment will go towards upgrading network capacity and adding 500 base transmitter stations into the Cambodia infrastructure.

The US has pledged $65 million to help improve the Cambodia economy according to The Honolulu Advertiser.

Cambodia Exports of Garments Grow 12 Percent

Cambodia exports of garments grew 12 percent in the first half of 2007 and Cambodia ranks as the fifth largest garment exporter in the world according to People’s Daily Online.

Nonetheless, Cambodia has much room for improvement. In other words, Cambodia exports per container cost between up to $800 and takes three days to clear legal procedures. Vietnam on the other hand, exports a container for about $300 and only takes a day to clear legal procedures.

According to the Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia (GMAC), the Cambodia garment industry hold over 330,000 jobs and provides livelihood for at least 1.7 million Cambodia people.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Predicts $1.7 billion Cambodia Oil Income by 2021

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has stated in a recent report that oil production out of Cambodia will possibly generate $1.7 billion per year by 2021 according to Asia Times Online.

Based off a study project driven by Chevron off the coast of southern Cambodia, Cambodia holds an estimated 700 million barrels of oil with a starting income of $174 million by 2011.

While the study seems positive for Cambodia, there are many negatives to such a windfall of oil including high inflation due to an mass increase in GDP.
